You’ve probably heard of the amazing health benefits associated with Thieves Oil (if not, carry on reading!) but perhaps you’re not willing to pay crazy amounts for it.
You may not feel comfortable supporting their company practices but feel like there’s no alternative that can provide the same quality and benefits!
Have no fear, we’ve rounded up the top five alternatives to Young Living’s Thieves Oil, broken down the ingredients for you, and included a handy DIY recipe for you to make your very own version as well!
Who Is Young Living?
Young Living is a Multi-Level Marketing company that sells essential oils and other related wellness-based products.
Founded in 1994, Utah- based Donald Gary Young started this flagship operation selling high-quality essential oils after he found them so beneficial for his own health problems and realized there was a huge untapped market for others like him who were impressed by the benefits of essential oils.
Multi-level marketing in itself is not illegal, and there are many companies that engage in the practice, making money for the upper echelons of the business as well as its participants, sellers, and recruiters.
For Young Living, however, there have been a number of court cases arguing that Young Living as a company exhibited many of the defining characteristics of an illegal pyramid scheme, namely that the focus of money made for the company was largely from recruiting new members and not on the products that are being sold themselves.
When a recruit is signed up to be a part of the Young Living family, they have to purchase a starter or premium kit and pay a bonus to the member who recruited them in the first place.
They are then given the opportunity to be able to recruit other members to their team, who in turn, once signed up, pay them a bonus for joining and having the right to sell Young Living products.
Because, as many of you readers will attest, those who are fans of essential oils really believe in their benefits strongly and want to get others to try them out for themselves, it is easy for this sort of marketing scheme to take off, as sellers genuinely believe in what they are distributing.
And Young Living products are good! There’s no denying that the essential oils Young Living sell are of great quality.
This is what draws many people in, as they know that Young Living makes good, quality-assured, and high-standard essential oils.
When Young founded the company in 1994, he realized there was a huge gap in the market for high-quality ingredients as many products in the essential oil game were not genuine or authentic, let alone good quality.
Many MLMs are criticized for selling substandard products, but Young Living does not do that.
The essential oil blends are verified and the ingredients are grown on corporate-owned farms so they have complete control over the high standards of production and quality of their ingredients.
Despite Young Living’s promises of giving recruiters an opportunity to take control of their financial future and gain independence and security, one suit argues that most members end up spending more money buying the products than actually making money, a telltale sign of a pyramid scheme.
As a member, the only way of making money is to recruit new people under you- something you are only eligible to do IF you continue to buy the companies product, even if you have tonnes.
The result is people continuously buying more products just for the benefit of being eligible to recruit other members, not to sell the product.
You can buy Young Living’s products free from the multi-level machinations, off Amazon, or their own website but many people choose not to support the company for ethical reasons, despite the high quality of their essential oils.
They are also just downright expensive! Especially when considering that other options and alternatives are available.
What Is Thieves Oil Blend, And Why Is It So Popular?
According to legend, Thieves Oil was a blend used in the 14th Century by spice traders and perfumers in Europe to protect themselves whilst robbing the households of the diseased and dying.
The tale goes that these robbers were offered lighter sentences in exchange for information on how they managed to rob plague-ridden households without becoming infected.
According to Young Living’s website, Donald Gary Young created the Thieves Oil blend for Young Living based on research from the British Museum Library archives.
This is apparently also the first essential oil blend to have been scientifically evaluated by university researchers and whether or not the legend is true, this spicy blend of essential oils may help you through nasty winter colds, lift your mood and freshen the air.
This historical information, of course, is not proprietary and many other companies have also created their own blends based on this research, however, the name Thieves Oil has been trademarked by Young Living.
Thieves Oil itself is lauded as a cure-all for many households and users of essential oils, with some sharing that ‘their kids never get sick at school’, ‘colds are gone in the house where they linger on at others’, ‘it’s the best germ killer and household cleaner ever used’.
Thieves Oil contains five different essential oils, all working together harmoniously to create a healing agent that thousands of people absolutely swear by.
These are what the individual oils are and their benefits when used by themselves:
- Clove Essential Oil- clove is a deep spiced fragrance that can calm the senses, promote a healthy immune system, and can contribute to promoting a healthy overall wellness.
- Lemon Essential Oil- used throughout the world as a disinfectant, this citrus essential oil is a powerful antioxidant and has purifying and cleansing properties.
- Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil- another oil that supports a healthy immune system. It also aids circulation, decreases inflammation, and can help to fight free radicals.
- Rosemary Essential Oil- this essential oil is a well-known rich antioxidant that is also a powerful anti-inflammatory.
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil- this is another oil that further supports your immune system, boosts your circulation, and is an anti-inflammatory.
As you can see, these ingredients all do the same or similar things, but working together they are a powerful combination that has been used for centuries for wellness and health benefits.
Why Wouldn’t I Just Buy Young Living Thieves Oil?
You absolutely can just buy Young Living Thieves Oil!
Though many people choose to find alternatives as the brand itself is definitely priced very highly and is not necessarily considered value for money, especially when there are many alternative brands available that sell similar, if not identical, blends to the lauded Thieves Oil essential oil blend.
Also, many people do not want to support the company structure of Young Living and would rather the benefits and life-changing differences people have found from essential oils not be tarnished by the money-hungry ideologies of multi-level marketing corporations.
Yes, we live in a corporate world, and everyone deserves to make money off of things, but a lot of people disagree with the predatory nature of MLMs and pyramid marketing strategies that Young Living employs, choosing instead to support other companies that more openly match their ethics.
Are There Any Alternatives To Young Living Thieves Oil?
There are lots of alternatives to the Thieves blend, and now that we’ve narrowed down the ingredients list, it’s simply a case of finding other brands that do an essential oil blend that has the same, or mostly the same, essential oils included in it!
These comparisons will go into detail about prices in comparison to Young Living Thieves Oil, which are of course always subject to change, and these products can all be bought easily through Amazon.
For reference, Young Living Thieve’s Oil can be bought here through Amazon if you would rather purchase that.
Natural Riches Five Guards Essential Oil Blend – Health Shield Aromatherapy
This beautiful blend contains all of the same five essential oils that are loved in the Young Living Thieves Oil blend.
It is an excellent oil for aromatherapy and comes in at less than half of the price of the Thieves Oil blend.
Quality-wise, Natural Riches is a well-renowned company that provides 100 percent pure essential oils. Made in the USA, most of their oils are 100 percent pure, unfiltered, natural, and GMO-free.
There is little to no data on third-party testing for this company however to verify its claims of 100 percent purity, so do bear this in mind when shopping.
Many reviews think this is the best value and most effective oil of the bunch, however, and there are plenty of testimonials that really love Natural Riches’s selection of essential oils and wellness products whilst also being a more budget-conscious brand.
doTERRA – On Guard Essential Oil Protective Blend
If you were hoping to steer clear of MLMs maybe this isn’t the product for you, as doTerra was founded by an ex-member of Young Living and the company operates in a similar way.
The prices are also pretty similar too, so you won’t be grabbing a bargain with this one.
It does however contain all the same key five ingredients as Young Living’s Thieves blend, though it does have a much lighter fragrance and a strong smell of orange oil rather than the clove and cinnamon punch you get from Thieves.
Customers go absolutely crazy for this stuff and it’s just as popular as Thieves blend to many stalwart supporters.
What people love is that the doTerra has the same deep thickness of liquid and pleasing texture found in Young Living’s Thieves.
But they certainly know how to get you, with just as predatory a marketing scheme as Young Thieves.
In terms of quality. doTerra is quality assured, tried and tested, and has thousands of positive reviews that swear by On Guard for just about everything.
Guard Essential Oil Blend – by Ms. Organics
If you are looking for value for money, this one is the way to go! It comes in at just under half the price of Thieves and is also double the quantity, making it four times better value.
Quality-wise, MS Organics is quality assured, though not independently tested by third parties.
Customers say the smell is slightly more lemon-oriented than cinnamon or clove, but the value of the product means it is a great one to use in a dilution around the house, in laundry, and out and about.
It has the same five ingredients as Thieves and states that it is therapeutic grade, though be aware that with no regulation, his statement doesn’t really mean too much.
Edens Garden Fighting Five Essential Oil Synergy Blend
Our personal favorite, this Edens Garden blend has those 5 lovely ingredients we now know and love.
Voted as the number one non-MLM essential oils company, Edens Garden is a woman-owned company started in 2009 with a mission to make high-quality essential oils available to everyone to share the benefits and holistic rewards.
Coming in at a reasonable price, this fighting five blends is the closest dupe to the Thieves blend and smells almost identical.
With better value, better company ethics, and a portion of their profits supporting charity, Edens Garden has a big tick in our books!
The oil consistency is a little thinner than the doTerra and Thieves, however, so definitely worth putting in a carrier oil or diffuser for use.
Plant Therapy-Germ Fighter
Another more budget-conscious version of Thieves, this one has our top five fighters at play.
Using their proprietary blend of essential oils to create this, the fragrance is a little more lemon oil and clove heavy than Thieves, which has a slightly stronger cinnamon undertone to it.
This is due to a slightly different type of cinnamon used, this blend uses Cinnamon Cassia as opposed to Ceylon bark, Cassia having a subtler scent to it.
With a company mission to provide affordable essential oils to families that still maintained exceptionally high standards, Plant Therapy has been around the block since its inception in 2011.
As a family-run company, Plant Therapy is a favorite for many essential oil lovers and the reasonable prices and high-quality products keep people rushing back.
Can I Make My Own Version?
Absolutely! Below is a handy classical recipe for Thieves Oil for you to try out at home!
Bear in mind that essential oils are potent and should be diluted before use!
If you are looking for a guide on what strength to dilute your essential oils for them to be safe for use but still effective, read through this great guide supplied by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (or NAHA). Here you will find a heap of great resources on dilution advice for all sorts of methods of application.
Onwards to the DIY Thieves Oil Blend!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Clove Essential Oil- 40 drops
- Lemon Essential Oil- 35 drops
- Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil- 20 drops
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil- 15 drops
- Rosemary Essential Oil- 10 drops
Mix all of your ingredients together carefully and store this mixture in a dark glass bottle to preserve its integrity.
This essential oil blend is highly concentrated so be sure to dilute it according to your specifications before you use it!
As a safe basis, the strength of essential oil should only account for 1 percent of the overall formula.
For example, in a cleaning product, you should use around 6-12 drops of the total essential oil blend per ounce of carrier oil or other carrier liquid.
This recipe is a great base to work from but you can always switch up the amounts to create your perfect scent, and you can also enhance it with other essential oils for your perfect formula!
A few other additions of essential oils you could try that also have antibacterial and health benefits:
- Scotch Pine
- Tea Tree
- Juniper Berry
- Bay Laurel
Have a play around to find your favorite combination of scents and concentration to see what works best for you.
How To Use Germ Fighting Oils?
Below is a list of ways you can incorporate germ-fighting essential oil blends into your home. Always follow the manufacturer’s advice, do regular patch tests, and follow safety precautions when using essential oils.
- For stuffed noses, bunged-up chests, or the general run-down feeling that comes with a nasty cold- try to catch a cold before it comes on and you might be able to nip it in the bud with a little well placed essential oil blend.
To help clear up stuffiness, mix together a 1-2 percent dilution of your favorite germ-fighting essential oil blend with your favorite carrier oil, (we recommend olive or jojoba). Rub this oily mixture onto sore throats, under irritated noses, or on the chest to help clear your airways and allow you to breathe easily.
- As steam- place 2 drops of your chosen blend into a bowl of hot steaming water and inhale the vapors from it.
Be careful with hot water if used for any sick or young people! This is great for clearing sinuses and refreshing the senses.
- In a diffuser- depending on your specific diffuser, use a few drops of your blend to water and let the vapors carry through your home for around 20 minutes, banishing those negative vibes and sickly thoughts!
Read your diffusers guide to find the best ratio of oils to use
- For home cleaning- the germ killer! Dilute your blend with water and isopropyl alcohol or white vinegar and add your blend at a ratio of 1 to 2 percent for the bottle.
Spray liberally on your surfaces. Be sure to do a patch test on varnished or stained wood and fabrics before spraying all over to make sure they are safe for them.
Do You Use Essential Oils In Your Home?
Do you use essential oils in your home? Have you just discovered their benefits or are you new to the idea of them?
We have been using them in our house for a while now, and have found them life-changing!
We used to be the kinds of people who cleaned fastidiously, a speck of dirt would be wiped away in a second but replaced with what?
Dangerous chemical-laden sprays and cleaners with large amounts of bleach, toxins, and artificial fragrances.
There was always something that felt like a ‘job well done’ when that scent of chemicals was wafting in the air, and to me, that was a clean and fresh house!
After a friend noticed the stink of chemicals in my home after a usual weekly deep clean, she questioned how ‘dirty’ I thought my house was that warranted the use of these high-grade cleaners that were better off suited to cleaning grease traps in restaurants than wiping off a few mucky handprints in a tiny home!
After doing my own research and that notion ‘clicking’ in my head, I am now all about the natural cleaning in my home and love the disinfecting properties that certain essential oils hold.
They also scratch that itch for a ‘squeaky clean’ smelling home I used to associate with intensive chemical sprays, and my home has never felt cleaner or safer for my family and friends to enjoy.
Unfortunately, my partner is sensitive to a few essential oils that I have absolutely no aversion to at all, namely cinnamon, eucalyptus, and peppermint, so I don’t often use a humidifier or certain blends that I don’t know the ingredients for.
With so many different sources of information, and so many different product types and suggestions, there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to essential oils, and just because Jen down the road has had no aversions to any essential oil ever doesn’t mean they are all safe and dandy for you to introduce into your household.
As with anything, use your common sense and try things out one by one!
That way, if someone does find that anything is a slight irritant to them, you can pinpoint the problem immediately and find a solution.
I myself am allergic to witch hazel (unfortunately I only found this out after applying cleanser to my whole face!), an ingredient that is safe and used worldwide for thousands of people across the globe!
But now I know, I simply don’t buy it for myself whilst for many friends it is an absolute essential and a gamechanger in their daily skincare routines.
This is just a roundabout way to say- be sure to do a patch test when using new oils!
Are You Practicing Safety Precautions When Using Essential Oils?
Essential Oils have a huge range of benefits and can be a part of your cleaning and wellness routine easily, in many cases they can provide relief from lifelong conditions and boost your immune system.
However, there are many essential oils that can have the opposite effect, and you may not be aware of how every member of your family may react to them- they are potent after all and can be dangerous if not used with relative caution.
Practice the below guidelines when you are using essential oils in your home and for your family health:
- Be sure to dilute your essential oils properly before use, either topically or around the home.
Never apply essential oils directly onto your skin without doing a reaction test- this is especially true for children- even if you yourself have no adverse reactions, be sure to always do a patch test on a wrist or arm for 24 hours before applying directly to any other sensitive area.
- Do not eat or drink essential oils unless you are specifically under supervision from a licensed and qualified professional.
There are many types of essential oils that are not safe to ingest, including eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil is a common ingredient in many Thieves Oil blends and is toxic when ingested.
- If you are using essential oils in a room for aromatherapy, be sure to have open windows or some form of good ventilation.
- When practicing aromatherapy in a room, have a think about who else is around you, and whether it is safe for them to breathe in essential oils.
Some essential oils are dangerous for pregnant women, children, and pets.
- Be careful to avoid your eyes when using essential oils, and wash out your eyes thoroughly if you accidentally get any in them.
- If you are a pregnant person, trying actively to get pregnant or currently breastfeeding, talk to a trusted medical professional or healthcare provider before inhaling or using essential oils in your home or on your body.
- If you have a home with small children or pets are around, be sure to keep your essential oils in a place where they won’t be able to reach them.
- When you are looking to buy new essential oils, be very aware of any product that claims to be a treatment for any specific condition or vague product information, as well as health claims.
The Food and Drug Administration does not regulate almost any essential oils, or their health claims, which means that many companies can falsely advertise their benefits, purity, and ingredients to consumers.
Be sure to follow up with your own research into what certain ingredients can do, and whether or not a brand of essential oils is third-party tested or has strict standards of purity.
- Even when diluted, some pets and animals can have dangerous adverse reactions to essential oils, even if they are diffused through the air and not directly ingested.
Keep pets out of the home when essential oils are being used.
Essential oils can be incredibly beneficial and there is a lot of evidence to back it up!
Just be sure to be mindful that not everyone reacts the same way to it, and definitely do not rub undiluted oils directly onto sensitive areas of your or your children’s bodies such as necks or faces as this can have serious consequences.
Quality Control: How Do You Know You Are Getting Good Quality Essential Oils?
If you are new to essential oils, you may think that phrases like ‘quality assured’, ‘therapeutic grade’, or ‘medicinal grade’ are certifications or guarantees of a product’s effectiveness or an oils’ legitimacy.
Unfortunately, this simply isn’t the case.
As the Essential Oil industry (and it is big money these days, make no mistake) is not regulated by the FDA or any other large trading standards association, it can be free reign as to how companies choose to label their products.
Every individual essential oil company can decide its own way of labeling its oils.
Most reputable essential oil companies probably stay away from the term therapeutic or medicinal grade but there are still a few of them that put this on their products for the purposes of marketing.
With so many different brands, at absolutely all ends of the price scale, it may seem that the most expensive is always going to be the best, right? Wrong!
Some of the priciest and most expensive oils can sometimes not be pure themselves!
You should look out for companies that never, ever do third-party testing, have little to no information on purity, and use vague and distracting language around the wellness and benefits of their products.
Try to find companies that have third-party testing, outside certification, and pride themselves on a transparent and fuss-free way of sharing quality assurance information with their customers.
Is It better To Buy Organic Essential Oils?
In ’essence’, essential oils are the concentrated extractions of plants materials.
When trying to be certified as an organic farming practice, these materials, along with the way they are harvested and grown, have to meet an incredibly high standard of quality and of purity before they can get the label (certified organic).
In this regard, organic is probably going to be better.
The difference can be relatively negligible but the plant material in organically certified essential oils has to be kept purer in order to receive this kind of regulation.
A lot of companies do their own regulation to maintain purity standards, but it can be pretty hard to decipher what these different standards actually entail.
So, if you are looking for the purest of the pure essential oils your best bet is to go for a certified organic company.
If getting organic ingredients is important to you, be sure to look out for the specific certified organic labeling as companies can have a tendency to use wishy-washy language to confuse buyers.
You can find essential oils just about anywhere these days from your local drugstore, to online, and smaller retailers.
Many of the most common and most popular essential oil brands will tend to have their own seller profile on Amazon so whilst you are actually buying from the brand itself your orders will be shipped through Amazon and will also have the potential for faster delivery and a guaranteed secure checkout.
Whether you are a stalwart lover of essential oils or just dipping your toes into them for now, the takeaway with Young Living’s Thieves Oil is this:
Thieves oil is essentially just a blend of essential oils, and whilst Young Living has trademarked the actual name ‘Thieve’s Oil’, the age-old recipe and components of it are still available far and wide, with many brands creating almost exactly the same recipe.
Bear in mind that whilst Young Living is the most highly recommended brand of essential oils, it is also a Multi-level Marketing company so it is in their best interest (as well as the best interest of all their sellers and consumers) to consistently have quality reviews and praise for their products.
This is not to say that they are not good products, they simply are good quality, pure ingredients, but you should bear in mind that this marketing strategy one hundred percent plays a part in how far and wide they are recommended and lauded, whilst there are absolutely loads of companies making equally high-quality products.
The potential health benefits of Thieve’s oil include boosting the immune system, fighting microbes and disease-causing bacteria, promoting wound healing, and promoting respiratory health.
You can make your very own DIY version of this oil, and build up your supply over time, increasing the quality of ingredients you use as your budget allows.
Whilst the charming reviews may spark excitement and interest, there is no magic spell or secret to Young Living’s Thieves Oil.
By using the same pure ingredients you can make it yourself and feel the benefits for your household and family without supporting a company that runs on a multi-level marketing scheme and is reliant on its consultants to be pushing expensive products on their friends and family!
